You’re Never Alone

You’re never alone when you have a companion. This companion, or companions, may get around with four paws, or with fins. Your companion might have three legs or only two. They could have a tail, or not, big or small ears, maybe none at all. They’re fluffy or bald, scaly or blooming with colorful feathers. No matter what, they will make sure you’re never alone.

You’re never alone when you go the kitchen to have a snack or cook a meal. They’ll be right there waiting for you to share.

You’re never alone when you come home after a trying day. They’ll call, jump, or spin with excitement to see you, and put a smile on your face because someone missed you.

You’re never alone when you go the bathroom. They’ll be waiting for you when you step out of the shower. They’ll know when you ran out of toilet paper.

You’re never alone when you go to bed. They’ll be there to comfort you to sleep, keep you safe, give or steal your warmth, and eagerly wait to greet you in the morning.

Especially when you’re in your head, wanting desperately to recede from the world, you’re never alone. They will listen when others won’t. They cuddle up, nuzzle, and lick away your tears. Anything to bring back a smile. We feel their affection, which eases our minds and lightens our hearts. They remind us to slow down, take a breath, and enjoy the little moments. No matter how cruel the world has been to us, they show us that kindness still exists.

We come to rely on these companions and their routines. They rely on us, too. They need our attention, our devotion, our guidance, especially our care and kindness. The keep us active through seeing to their needs, through grooming and playing. We find joy in filling their lives with happiness as much as they do for us. They want the best for us, as much as we want the best for them. The bond is mutual, after all.

They give us a feeling of accomplishment when we nurture them. We provide food and water, or healthcare. They rely on us to give them a voice and make the right decision. And if we must, let them go when the time comes, but embrace them in our hearts forever.

You’re never alone when you own a pet. Pets change lives. They become an extension of our household, families, and bring a unique love into our lives that cannot be found elsewhere.
